From the Albion Recorder, March 22, 1906: The Lake family of Marengo, consisting of the father and mother and 9 children gained unenviable notoriety a few months ago. They were in terrible poverty. Typhoid fever broke out in their midst and two of the children died. The father was disinclined to do anything for the support of his family and they were in dire straits. Finally they went up north. Yesterday the mother returned with six of the children, five boys and one girl. They came in from the west on the 3:12 Michigan Central train and left for Marengo on the 5:12 local car, where it is presumed they will locate at their old home."
