Johan Christlieb Zieman was born June 21, 1822 in Unheim, Pomerania, Prussia. In 1830 when he was eight years old, his father died, and his brother Gottlieb took over the family farm.

At the age of 26 he immigrated to Waterloo, Canada, in 1848. It is believed that his mother, Anna, may have accompanied him. If not, she came shortly thereafter.

In 1852 Johann moved to Guttenberg, Iowa, and on March 1, 1854, he married Elizabeth Meier in Garnavillo, Iowa, by Pastor Muller.

Records in Clayton County, Iowa, show that Elizabeth and Johann purchased 120 acres of land near Volga, Iowa in 1856. In 1863 they purchased a diagonally adjacent 40 acres. In 1868 that was sold and 100 acres in the west half of section 33 was purchased near Farmersburg. In 1874 that was sold and 160 acres was purchased from J.B. McWilliams and another 80 acres and part of a 40 acres from Wesley Smith. Parts of this were sold to their son Albert and some to the Backhaus family.

In 1890 Johann and his wife moved to the southeast edge of Postville, Iowa, where they lived until Elizabeth’s death on September 28, 1902. Then he made his home with his daughter, Mary Kugel. He died at the age of 92 years, on November 4, 1914. Both he and his wife are buried in the Postville cemetery. They were of the Lutheran faith.

Following are the names and birthdays of their children:
• Helena Eliesbeth born on 13 January 1855
• Albertine Emilie born 19 February 1856
• Marie Auguste born 25 August 1857
• Maria Luise Wilhelmine born 1 July 1859
• Johann Albert born 14 December 1860
