When Jean was 13 years old, her father sailed to America with James Whitelaw, representing the Scotch American Company of Farmers, to search out and purchase a tract of land where they could settle.
In 1780, at the age of 20, she married Alexander Miller. He was an accomplished quarrier and stone mason.
