Jean Allan was the daughter of David Allan and Margaret Wilson. She was born in the Inchinnan Parish of Renfrewshire, Scotland.

When Jean was 13 years old, her father sailed to America with James Whitelaw, representing the Scotch American Company of Farmers, to search out and purchase a tract of land where they could settle.

In 1780, at the age of 20, she married Alexander Miller. He was an accomplished quarrier and stone mason.
