From Minnerath Family History (by Karen & Janice Minnerath, 1995; used w/permission):

"Joseph, Maria Anna, and their first three children came across "the big pond" in 1846 and purchased land from the Territory of Wisconsin, approximately one year before the area became a state. The original homestead has been owned by a direct Minnerath descendant ever since.

"According to family history, on 24 December 1870 Joseph Minnerath opened the door to the basement to investigate the source of the smoke filling the home. The cause of the fire was suspected to be the ashes that were kept in the basement for making lye soap."

According to newspaper article in the Jefferson Banner, the fire started (exact cause unknown; see above for possible) around 3:00 AM. His wife discovered the fire & alarmed the house -- the rest of the family escaped, but by the time they noticed he was not there, the house was too engulfed to allow anyone to find him.

CHILDREN:
-o- Anna Mary (1840-1920)
-o- Michael C. (1844-1930)
-o- John Peter (1846-1893)
-o- Elizabeth (1848-1916)
-o- Anna Maria (1851-1929)
-o- Veronika Mary (1853-1882)
