Anna Matilda Leedy was the sixth child born to Jacob and Catherine (Gillespie) Leedy. Anna was born in Baltimore, MD in 1852. Anna's father and three of her brothers were drummers in the Civil War. Anna's mother was from Gettysburg and there is a family story that the family helped bring relief items to the townspeople of Gettysburg after the battle. The Leedy family is in Baltimore in the 1860 Census and Anna's youngest brother John was born in Baltimore in 1864. Sometime between 1864 and the 1870 Census the family moved to Bryan, OH. Anna probably met Thomas White Yates when in her mid-teens. Anna and Thomas White Yates were married in Bryan, OH on 16 Sept 1874. George Horace Yates was born in 1875 and Elizabeth (Lizzie) Yates was born in June of 1880. The 1880 Census shows the family in Bryan, OH. The 1890 Census burned, so at this time we don't know when the family went to Youngstown, OH; they were in the 1900 Census in Youngstown (as were Anna Matilda's parents). Thomas White Yates passed away in 1909 and was buried in Bryan, OH. Anna continued to live in Youngstown with her son George and his family through the 1910 Census. In the 1910 and 1920 Census Anna was living with her daughter Lizzie and grand-daughter Katherine in Toledo. She spent her last days in Youngstown. When Anna passed away at age 86 she was buried with her husband in Bryan, OH.
