Obituary: Alice Berkey, born May 17, 1920 in Bancroft, Idaho. She passed away December 5, 2004 in Encino, California. She was the daughter of Henry Van Slooten and Eunice Christensen and the sister of Henry Van Slooten, Don Van Slooten and Connie Bates (deceased). She was married for more than 35 years to Harvey G. Berkey after the passing of her first husband, J. Edgar Nelson. Mrs. Berkey was a more than fifty year resident of Encino, California where she was actively involved in a variety of community and philanthropic organizations and activities. She was an officer in the National Charity League of the San Fernando Valley and local PTA organizations and was the founder of Les Amis, a social and service organization.
She leaves behind five loving children and their spouses, J. Robert and Cheryl Nelson, Ginger A. and Larry Daines, William E. and Launa Nelson, Kent G. and Mary Lou Berkey, Douglas B. and Gail J. Berkey; 18 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Services will be held Wednesday, December 8, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 614 West Foothill Blvd., Arcadia, California. Hello! I thought this name and location sounded familiar. I have photographed this crypt before. But Alice's name isn't on it. This is a double crypt and there are two nameplates on it (Harvey and Jean Berkey). I believe you are allowed to place a couple of sets of cremated remains in these crypts along with two bodies, so it is possible that her remains are in this crypt.
