Timothy Babb served as a replacement for his brother-in-law, David Smith, during the Civil War. David had several small children when his call came to serve and the practice of hiring a replacement was quite common in some of the early wars. Mr. Smith paid Timothy $500 for the duty which was a considerable amount of money at that particular period of time. Timothy and Emily had a daughter, Dora E., who died at nine years of age, and a son, Charles. After Emily's death, Timothy went West and became a miner of silver.
