Mary was born ca. 1832 in County Kildare, Ireland. She travelled with her parents to Dublin, where the family took a ship to Liverpool. She married Robert Spencer in Salford, Greater Manchester, Lancashire in September 1857. Their two children, Margaret Jane and Thomas, were born before they boarded the ship Manhattan. They arrived in New York on June 11, 1862. They chose to live in Paterson, New Jersey where Robert could easily transfer his skills in the cotton mills of Manchester to the silk mills. Family lore says that Mary Ann had flaming red hair and a fiery temper to match.
