William James Ackerman Jr., 77, widower of Kay Lane Gunter Ackerman, died July 1, 2012, at Georgetown Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Ackerman was born October 31, 1934, in Georgetown County, the son of the late William James Ackerman Sr. and the late Hazel McCants Ackerman.
He served in the South Carolina Army National Guard and, after 41 years of service, retired from International Paper Company.
Mr. Ackerman graduated from Winyah High School in 1955. He had excelled in football. He was a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, Battery White Camp # 1568.
He was survived by four children, Stacie M. Ackerman of Lexington, Sandra G. (Ken) Harris of Lexington, Billy J. Gunter of Allendale, and A. Glenn (Patricia) Gunter of Georgetown; five grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and a nephew, Marc (Lillian) Parker of Georgetown.
He was predeceased by a sister, Gertrude Ackerman Parker,
Funeral services, officiated by the Rev. Billy Anderson, were Wednesday, July 4, 2012, in First Baptist Church. Burial, directed by Graham Funeral Home, followed in Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens.
