John worked for 30 years managing furniture warehouses in the Birmingham area before retiring in 1975 from Lorch Furniture, which was owned by Jim Walter Corp. He was a faithful member of the Friendship Community Church (formerly Friendship Methodist) attending regularly until just a few months before his passing. One of his greatest joys was sitting in his front porch swing reading his Bible and waving to passing friends.
From a large family, he was preceded in death by his five brothers and two sisters. However, he always remained close to his numerous nieces and nephews to whom he was simply "Uncle John." He was "Granddaddy John" to his special grandchildren; being especially close to Jackie, Jeremy, Jamey, Scott, and Paula. He is also survived by his devoted daughter and son-in-law, Margaret and Ray Channel of Mount Olive with whom he was able to spend his final years. John is also survived by a multitude of friends.
Visitation will be held at Friendship Community Church on Saturday, June 30, 2012 from 10:00 to 11:00 am, with a celebration of his life beginning at 11:00 am in the sanctuary officiated by Bro. Benny Guffey and Bro. Vance Belcher; and interment in Friendship Cemetery following the service. If desired, contributions may be made to the Friendship Cemetery Fund in lieu of flowers.
