This is a picture of my great great grandfather, John R. Alyea, who joined the union army primarily to get away from his wife.
He was 56 when he joined, dyed his hair and lied about his age. He was captured in the Stoneman raid on July 31, 1864.
He was sent first to Andersonville as a POW and then transferred to a prison camp in Florence, SC where he died in October 1864.
His daughter married Henry W. Wise, my grandfather, who had been in the 99th Indiana Infantry with John R. Alyea's two sons, George and David.
It was his wife who applied for a pension in 1865 as a widow of a Union Soldier who died in service.
It is ironic that Stoneman was trying to free the POW's at Andersonville and ended up putting more men in there who ultimately died of the experience.
