Jahanah [sometimes spelled Johannah or Joanna] Hayward was born on September 21, 1804, in Sussex County, New Jersey. She was the first of six children born to [first name unknown] Hayward and Elizabeth Saxby. Her five younger siblings, which consisted of three sisters and two brothers, were Nancy, David, Rachel, Ann, and Samuel. Based on census records, Jahanah's father died sometime before 1830, leaving her mother a widow.

On December 1, 1820, Jahanah Hayward, aged 16, married James Spencer, aged 20, in Byram Township, Sussex County, NJ. The two had their first child, a son, William Spencer, on September 16, 1823. Seven more children, four daughters, and three more sons, were to follow: Elizabeth Spencer in 1826, Mary R. Spencer in 1831, John Spencer in 1833, Sarah Spencer in 1836, Caroline Spencer on March 4, 1838, Charles P. Spencer in January 1840, and George Spencer on June 30, 1845.

According to the 1850 U.S. Federal Census, James and Jahanah Spencer and their five youngest children, John, Sarah, Caroline, Charles, and George, were residing in Newton, Sussex County, NJ. James' occupation was recorded as "laborer," and it appears the family was living on rented farmland owned by Philip Woolever. Additionally, based on period maps, the land that the Spencers were living on was most likely located near present-day Andover Township and the border of Byram Township. The census also indicated that Jahanah's son, John, was also working as a laborer, while three of the other children, Sarah, Caroline, and Charles, were attending school. Her youngest child, George, aged 5, was possibly too young to have begun school yet.

By 1859, the Spencers had relocated to Flanders, Morris County, NJ, as records indicate Jahanah was baptized as an adult on March 13, 1859, at the Flanders United Methodist Church. Her name was spelled as "Joanna Spencer" on the baptismal record.

Jahanah Spencer died on February 4, 1860, in Flanders, Morris County, NJ at the age of 55. Her cause of death was "consumption" (tuberculosis). She was buried in the Methodist Cemetery outside the Flanders United Methodist Church, where she had been baptized less than a year before her death.
