Greenwood SC – Mrs. Etta Nelson Whatley, 75, of Greenwood died Thursday [November 19, 1959] at Self Memorial Hospital after 12 months of declining health and a serious illness of four days. She was born in Laurens County, daughter of the late Andy M. Nelson and Mts. Lila Watts Nelson, both natives of Laurens County. Mrs. Whatley made her home in Greenwood for the past 50 years and was a member of the First Baptist Church. Her husband, J. R. Whatley died July 28, 1935. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Herbert E. Kneece, of Batesburg, Mrs. George O’Cain, Jr., of Atlanta GA, ad Mrs. Mack Plowden of Greenwood; one son, J. Sidney Whatley, of Charleston; seven sisters, Mrs. W. T. Whatley and Mrs. W. W. Hendrix of Greenwood, Mrs. Claude S. Smith, Mrs. A. M. Young and Mrs. Clarence W. Thomas of Charlotte, and Mrs. W. Q. Pendley of Atlanta GA, and two brothers, Gordon Nelson of Rock Hill and Watts Nelson of Columbia, and seven grandchildren, one great-granddaughter. Burial in Mountville Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
