John Tedford, one of the pioneers of this county who passed away at his home in Columbus City, August 16, 1911 settled in Louisa county, Iowa in September 1851 and has been one of the most respected citizens of the county for nearly 60 years. He was born in Blount county, Tennessee in 1823 and had he lived till the 28th of next February he would have entered his 90th year.

John Tedford through his long life, has been noted for his honesty, integrity and high purposes. He has been an elder in the Associate Presbyterian church for more than 50 years. His great grand father was a first lieutenant in the Revolutionary War, taking part in the battle of Guilford Court House, in which battle Capt. Alexander Tedford, his brother commanding the company lost his life. His Father, James Tedford, commanded a company during the war of 1812 under Gen. Jackson. The grandmother of John Tedford was Mary Paxton, one of that celebrated Paxton family of Virginia.

John Tedford married in early life Elizabeth Hamill who died in Columbus City in 1894. He in the fall of 1895 was again married to Mrs. Esther Johnston. His children by his first marriage are Judge W. H. Tedford of Corydon, Robert who lost his life in the Civil War, Jane the wife of J. Calvin Duncan who died in 1881, Rev. J. P. Tedford who died in 1885, Agnes the wife of W. A. Duncan, Joseph and Harvey who live in Taylor county, Iowa. This noble, exemplary citizen, was buried in the Columbus City cemetery Saturday, where he awaits the resurrection morn.
