He was born in Turkey Creek Twp., Kosciusko County, IN to Hiram and Zilpha (Shew) Freeman. He had a fraternal twin sister, Elzora.
He married Mary Alice Blubaugh on June 25, 1882 in Kosciusko County, Indiana. The family relocated to Plymouth, IN about 1885 and then moved to Jonesboro, IN about 1899. About 1908, Lafayette and his son, Harry, left Indiana to work in the oil fields near San Antonio, TX. Records indicate the rest of the family remained in Indiana.
Although he suffered for several years from the debilitating effects of cancer of the face, he continued to work in the oil fields.
His son, George, died the same day, January 6, 1918, at Fort Thomas, Kentucky. After family members returned with the bodies, Lafayette and George were buried at the Jonesboro Cemetery on January 11, 1918.

Headstone likely washed away during flood and building that stored plot records was damaged by fire.
