Lawyer, jurist and financier. After completing his education, he began the study of law at the Albany, New York Law School and was admitted to the bar in 1860. He began the practice of his profession the same year in Oswego and remained there until 1866. Coming west in 1866, he became a member of the St. Louis bar and almost immediately gained recognition as a lawyer of very superior attainments. In 1870 he was elected judge of the circuit court, having come forward in response to a very general call for his services in that capacity from the legal fraternity of St. Louis. He served four years on the bench and then resigned to return to the practice of his profession. After retiring from the bench Judge Madill continued the practice of law until he was made president of the Union Trust Company.
