As a 15 year old youth Herbert was the first person reported by name to use Amateur Radio in disaster relief. Herbert used his modest radio to transmit information to the Overland radio station in the Huntington Bank Building near the Columbus, Ohio City Hall in March of 1913.
1917 graduate of Columbus West H.S., in 2013 he was inducted into the school's hall of fame. Veteran U.S. Army WWI serving in the Signal Corp in Cincinnati. Post war he worked at radio station WPAL owned by Avery-Loeb Electric. After WPAL he was chief engineer at WAIU, now WTVN. WAIU was one of the original 16 CBS Radio affiliates. While at WAIU "H.V." worked with a team to develop one of the first mixing boards to allow the use of three microphones at once. Akerberg went on to work for CBS Radio as Vice-President of affiliate relations. He later held the same position with CBS-TV.
