Funeral Services Held on Saturday For J. E. Cheyney:
Member of Prominent Pioneer Family Passed Away at Age 76. Was Retired Livestock Feeder.
John Ezra Cheyney, son of Robert and Mary Cheyney was born near Cheyney, Pennsylvania, July 13, 1866. He came to Glenwood as a boy of 17 with his parents and lived in the vicinity of Glenwood for the remaining 60 years of his life.
During young manhood he was associated with his brothers in the Cheyney Meat Market. Later on he took up farming which profession he followed until his health failed about 2 years ago. He entered the Mercy Hospital in October 1942 and later was taken to a convalescent home in Omaha, Nebraska. While there due to a severe heart attack he passed away March 31st 1943 at 4:30 a.m., at the age of 76 years, 8 months, and 18 days.
On November 29, 1900 he was united in marriage with Cecelia Richards of Glenwood, Iowa. Mr. & Mrs. Cheyney were the parents of 8 children, six of whom are living. Two children and his wife preceded him in death.
Surviving are his daughter Mrs. Edith Cowardin of Pacific Junction and 5 sons -- Thorn W. of Port Orchard, Washington; Milton R. of Spokane, Washington; James of Pearl Harbor; John R. and Woodrow W. of Pacific Junction. There are also ten grandchildren, one brother Charles H. of Omaha: Four sisters -- Mrs. Margaret Toiles of Norfolk, Virginia; Mrs. Mattie Eaton of Centralia, Washington; Mrs. Anna Donaldson of Beverley, New Jersey and Mrs. Edith Gaines of Excelsior Springs, Missouri and other relatives including a cousin Miss Elizabeth McCoy of Glenwood with whom he made his home for several years. He was at that time a member of the IOOF Lodge.
An affectionate father and congenial neighbor he was loved and respected by all who knew him. He was especially fond of children and was called Grandpa by scores.
Relative and friends alike will miss his kindly genial presence. Funeral services were held in the James Chapel in Glenwood Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. C. B. Hilton, pastor of the Glenwood Baptist church. Music for the service was furnished by Janice and Jessie Rodman, accompanied at the piano by Mary Evelyn Logan. Those in charge of the floral tributes were Mrs. Charley Coffey, Mrs. John Powles, Mrs. Frank Kemp and Mrs. Opal McClain. Those serving as pallbearers were A. R. McPherron, Kenneth Huffman, Charley Coffey, Dwight Lincoln, Ernest Walker, and W. H. Fireoved. The body was laid to rest in the Glenwood cemetery.
