She married Lester M. Arhelger on Aug. 5, 1947, in Fredericksburg, Texas. They lived in various towns before settling down in San Angelo, Texas. She worked as a labor and delivery nurse at the San Angelo Clinic Hospital in downtown San Angelo. In 1969, she carried her nursing skills to St. John's Hospital where she worked for 17 years before her retirement. Aside from raising her family and the practice of nursing, Dorothy always raised a large garden. She will be remembered by many for her nursing TLC and her homemade pickles and sauerkraut. She had a lifelong devotion to her Catholic faith. In 1976, she became part of the St. Angela Fraternity Secular Franciscan Order.
She is survived by her husband, Lester M. Arhelger; their children and spouses, Ida and Barney McCoy of Houston, Margaret Barrett of Victoria, Marvin Arhelger of Houston, Theresa Arhelger of San Antonio, Anthony and Kathy Arhelger of San Angelo, Doris and Vernon Hagler of San Angelo, Rita and Robert Graham of Corpus Christi, Francis and Susan Arhelger of Houston, Edward Arhelger of San Angelo, Peter and Gwen Arhelger of Houston, Mary and Howard Droll of San Angelo, Lisa and John Cortez of San Angelo; two sisters, Norma Kraus of San Antonio and Vernell Ahrens of Kerrville; 27 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers include Curtis Eckerman, Wesley Eckerman, Clinton Graham, Trey Hagler, Louis Arhelger, Joel Arhelger, David Arhelger and Benjamin Arhelger.
