VIRGIL LEE BABCOCK

Virgil Lee Babcock, son of Roy and Nancy Deatherage Babcock was born April 4, 1921, east of Faucett on the Woodward farm, now owned by Edwin and Mary Lee Farris. He passed away at Mo. Methodist Hospital Sept. 26, 1968, at the age of 47.

Virgil Lee spent his entire life in the Agency and Faucett communities.

He graduated from Agency High School. He was married to Miss Ernestine Sponcel July 20, 1941, who with one daughter and two sons survive him.

After a short period of working in St. Joseph, Virgil began farming and farmed extensively. He owned his farm home east of Faucett and took great pride in making it a show place. Aside from this, he owned and farmed land in Platte County. He was a man who took great interest in his work, what he did, he did well.

He was an asset to his community, always striving for its good. He was a member of R-V School Board for a number of years and was a great sports fan. Scarcely an athletic activity took place without his having a place as timekeeper, scorekeeper, or wherever else he was needed. in the summer season, he worked with the baseball and softball clubs.

He was a member of the Faucett Christian Church and worked diligently at various times as co-sponsor of the youth group, Church Board member and on committees.

Virgil was a person who made friends easily, his hearty handshake and broad smile won for him a new friend.

He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife Ernestine, daughter Lana, a music instructor in West Platte High School, two sons Don and Virgil Lee II, all of the home; his father and stepmother, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Babcock, Agency (his mother preceded him in death in 1960); three brothers, Roy Dale, Kansas City; Homer, Baltimore MD; and Gene, Agency; two sisters, Helen Joy Williams, Dearborn; and Minnie Lou Miller, St. Joseph; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Memorial services were conducted by his pastor Rev. Eugene Albright at Heaton-Bowman Mortuary, Saturday, Sept. 28th, and his body was laid to rest in the Agency Cemetery.

Casket bearers were six cousins: Fred Reynolds, Don Deatherage, John and Joe Thacker, C. R. Snyder and Wade Montgomery.

The many, many friends who called, those attending services, and the nearly 100 floral tributes attested to the high esteem in which Virgil was held.

In the words of his pastor, Rev. Albright, "Virgil had a personality that radiated and beamed good will to all with whom he came in contact. Virgil was strong for his God, his family, his church and his pastor." - a fitting tribute to Virgil Lee.
