Maco Stewart, 98, of Corsicana, passed away Wednesday, June 27, 2012. Funeral service will be 1 p.m., Saturday, June 30, 2012, at Westhill Church of Christ with Ferman Carpenter officiating. A visitation will follow the service at the church. Burial will be at Resthaven Memorial Park.

Maco was born in Pursley, Texas, to the late James R. and Edna Owen Stewart. Maco was a Godly man of character, integrity, honesty and dependability. He began his football career with a friend buying his first pair of cleats. He played football at Corsicana High School and was inducted into the High School Hall of Fame. He then went on to play for SMU, playing in the Rose Bowl in 1936, and was inducted into the SMU football Hall of Fame also. He coached in Mexia and then in McAllen upon meeting his soon to be wife Betty Miller. Maco and Betty married March 23, 1939. Maco then joined the U.S. Navy for four years before returning to be the head coach of football and baseball in Longview. His former Lobo football players started a golf tournament in his name where many have gathered as a reunion for over 20 yrs. A scholarship to Stephen F Austin in his name was also created for students aspiring to teach. He later returned to Corsicana in 1951 to join his brother at Stewart Motor Company. Maco was a leader in the community. He served 25+ years on the CISD school board. He had many enjoyments in his life and one of those being quail hunting. He also had a great compassion for the youth and special needs children. He always put God first in his life and was an active member of Westhill Church of Christ where he served and taught for many years.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Betty Miller Stewart who passed away in 1994; brother and sister in law, F.C. and Ava Nell Stewart; and two brothers at childhood.

He is survived by his children, Leland Stewart, of Las Vegas, NV, Sandra Stewart, of Waxahachie, Paul Stewart and wife, Dianne, of Corsicana, Terry McElroy and husband, Dr. Pete, of Corsicana, Dr. Chris Stewart and wife, Michelle, of Garland; grandchildren, Scott Bechtel and wife, Sheila, of Waxahachie, Mark Stewart, of Houston, Don Bechtel, of Waxahachie, Rhonda Bechtel, of Waxahachie, Michelle Glasscock and husband, Larry, of Missouri, Brent Stewart and wife, Lanette, of Corsicana, Courtney Drain and husband, Dr. Zach, of Corsicana, R.P. Stewart, of Kentucky, Wes McElroy and wife, Christine, of College Station, Byron McElroy, of Justin, Christopher Stewart, of Garland, Tyler McElroy, of Corsicana, Meagan Stewart, of Garland; great-grandchildren, Brandon Bechtel, Emily Glasscock, Bryson Bechtel, Kate Glasscock, Kylie Glasscock, Elliette Stewart, Colton Stewart, Ethan Drain, Deylon Drain; and numerous nieces, nephews, friends, and many cousins in Texas and other states.
