Hester Maria Coleman was the daughter of James Coleman and Amy Foster. The Coleman family came to Jamestown in 1609 according to the biography of Hester's brother, Foster (see URL at bottom of memorial).

Hester married Elias Truitt on July 10, 1832, in Piqua, Miami Co., OH. The name on her gravestone is Maria C, and she is shown as Maria in all of the census records I have found. I imagine the C. stood for her maiden name, as this way of marking gravestones was often done during that period of time.

Elias and Maria were the parents of:
Abdell Coleman (1834-1863)
Johnson Burt (1836-1865)
Eli (1837-1907)
William Ross (1839-1862)
Electa Ann Maria (1842-1862)
Sarah L (1845-1871)
Mary Caroline (1847-1881)
Myrella Guilford (1849-1850)
Anna Amanda (1851-1854)
Oliver Guilford (1853-1924)
Ella M (1856-?)

In the 1850 Census of Davis County, Iowa, Elias and Maria were living in Soap Creek Township, with the following children:
Abel - Age 16 (Correct name was Abdell)
Jonathan - Age 14
Eli - Age 12
William - Age 10
Sarah L. - Age 6
Mary C. - Age 4
Manilla - Age 1 (Correct name was Myrella)

In 1860, they were still living in Davis County, but Jonathan and Myrella were no longer living with their parents. Two more children had been added to the family: Oliver, age 7, and Ella, age 4.

By 1870, Elias and Maria were living in Ottumwa with:
Sarah - Age 25
Mary - Age 22
Oliver - Age 17
Ella - Age 14
Charles - Age 13
