His parents and 4 siblings came from England aboard the Wellington in 1845. It has been reported that he fell overboard on the trip to America and was rescued by one of the ship's crew.

He fought with the Union Army (Company "K" of the 20th regiment of Illinois Infantry) during the Civil War.
