Bernie was born in Leesburg, Highland County, Ohio the son of Elmer Talmadge and Sallie (nee Bernard) Naylor. At an early age he moved with his parents and brother Everett Demont Naylor to Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio. He graduated from Columbus North High School and The Ohio State University in 1938. He was an optometrist in Worthington and Utica, Ohio. He married Catherine Newton Collins on 29 June 1942. During World War II he served in the United States Army stationed at Hammond General Hospital in Modesto, California. He had one child, Bernard Allison Naylor. He died on April Fool's Day in 1998 -- he loved to tell jokes. He is buried in Cumberland, Guernsey County, Ohio
