The translation of the Latin inscription from the church records:

Under this mound lies the remains of Rev. John Payson AM, formerly pastor of the church of Fitchburg who died May 18, 1804 in the fifty-ninth year of his pastorate. A man of most superior natural talent of a very benevolent disposition endued with learning and faithful to his divine commission. In the study and practice of theology esteemed for friendly advice and deeds of charity rather than useless contention and the pursuits of sordid avarice.
