Younger of two daughters of John and Mary Malena Meinzer Becker, she married Rev. Phillip Zahn in 1876. They had seven children:

John Becker 1877-1946
Edward Byrnhard 1879 - 1952
Hulda B. Zahn 1881 - 1958
Roy B. 1882 - 1954
Guy Harold 1885 - 1952
Winifred Pearle 1888 - 1975 mBergman
Harry Dietrich 1889 - 1945

They served eight charges over the years in the German Evangelical Association, one forerunner of the United Methodist church.

After retiring, the couple bought a house on Best Street (now 2645 N. Dayton) with a village of Native Americans in teepees all around them. Phillip had intended to work with two other Evangelical ministers to establish a new congregation.

Shortly after arriving in Chicago, Phillip began displaying symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis, according to his granddaughter, Bonnie Yunker. He also suffered with residual problems from an auto accident about 12 years before he died. With the help of her family, Mary cared for him as an invalid the last 14 years of his life.
