On September 12, 1918, John Shand Reid, aged 45, stated that he resided at 37 Amity Street, Patchogue, NY, was a salesman for Travis Ziegler Co. on Oak Street, Patchogue and was married to Alice Reid, when he registered for the draft during World War I.
In 1940, John S. Reid, aged 68, could be found living at 37 Amity Street, Patchogue, with his wife, Alice Reid, aged 70, and sons, Sherman, 43, Roscoe, 41, and Arthur Reid, aged 36. John was shown to be a bookkeeper for a retail coal company.
Obituary - An elderly Patchogue man who was a retired bookkeeper and former grocery store owner here many years ago, committed suicide in his home at 37 Amity Street late Sunday night or early Monday morning. He was 80 years of age.
Mr. Reid's body was found by his son, Arthur Reid, who lives at the same address, when he came home about 2 a.m Monday. He found his father lying on the bottom three steps with a rope tied around his neck. The other end of the rope was tied to the upper part of the bannister.
Arthur Reid immediately called Patchogue Village Police and Patrolman Arthur Benincase and Harold Trolley responded. They were joined by Zone Chief Investigator Jack Barry of the district attorney's office, and by Edward Klane, who pronounced the man dead. He had been treating Mr. Reid for a cardiac condition, Dr. Klane said. Dr. Klane estimated that Mr. Reid had been dead for about two hours.
The coroner, Dr. P.J. Laviano, authorized removal of the body to C.W. Ruland Sons Funeral home, and later ruled the death, caused by a fractured neck, as a suicide. No inquest will be held.
Arthur Reid told investigators he had brought breakfast to his father at about 7 a.m. Sunday, and had left the house at about 10 a.m., returning at 2 a.m. Monday. His father had been confined to bed for about five weeks, he said. No suicide note was found.

He was a member of the Patchogue Methodist Church, a member of the Patchogue Fire Department, a charter member of the Euclid Hose Company of the Fire Department, a member of the Patchogue Exempt Firemen's association, and a former member of the Woodmen of America.
He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Helen Ball of Bay Shore; a son, Arthur Reid of Patchogue; three sisters in Scotland; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
An exempt firemen's association service was held at 8 p.m. Tuesday at the C.W. Ruland Sons chapel in Patchogue, and a funeral service was there at 2 p.m. yesterday with the Rev. Wesley D. Osborne of the Patchogue Methodist Church officiating. Interment was in the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Patchogue.
