In 1915, during the period of violent hostility to all things German, a son changed the spelling of the family name to KNIGHT. Most later descendants have that spelling.

John Knecht, born at Machtolsheim, Wuertt., Germany, Sept. 19, 1835, died Nov. 4, 1926, at Monmouth, Ill. He came to America in 1853. He married Henrietta Schneider, a sister of Rev. John Schneider, of the Illinois Conf., in 1859.
Six children were born to this union, one of whom died in infancy. Mrs. Knecht died in 1913. Bishop R. Dubs was a frequent visitor in his home. He joined the Evangelical Church about New Year, 1859. In the Deerfield, Ill., Evangelical church he was Sunday-school superintendent and class leader for eleven years and also served as trustee. He was for many years a reader of "Der Christliche Botschafter" and always a liberal giver to the enterprises of his church. He is survived by 5 children
