John Thomas Cardwell was born in the town of Elba, Alabama to William McKenzie Cardwell and Mary "Polly" Amason. John was the oldest of 4, two brothers; Richard Benjamin and William Nathaniel and one sister,Faithy Elizabeth. They were all orphaned as children. Their father died at the battle of Seven Pines during the Civil War 1862. Their mother died a few years later and they were raised by their maternal aunt and uncle, Francis Marion Amason. He married Mary Ann "Mollie" Thompson December 30, 1877 in Montgomery Alabama and had at least two children when they moved to Washington County Texas by the end of 1882. He was a farmer for most of his life. He had 9 children, one died in infancy. In 1917 the family moved from Chappell Hill to Navasota in Grimes County. He is buried next to his wife with one headstone.
