In the matter of the Pension claim of Catherine Luce Widow of Alonzo Luce late Private Co. B. 19th Reg. Ill. Vol. Inf.
On this 17th day of November 1905 personally appeared before me a Probate Judge in and for said County & State who being duly sworn according to law upon his oath says, My name is I. D. Luce, my age is 60 years, my residence is Iola, Allen Co., Kansas. I am a brother of Alonzo Luce named above, I was acquainted with him all my life, I was acquainted with Catherine Luce before her marriage to Alonzo Luce. I was living in Stark Co., Ill. when they were married in December 1864. I know that they lived continuously together as husband and wife until the death of Alonzo Luce March 3rd 1905, and never divorced, I knew Catherine Luce for several years before her marriage to Alonzo Luce, as Catharine Miller and was informed and believe that her husband James Miller had been drowned several years prior to my acquaintance with her. I saw the letter written by the partner of James Miller informing Catharine Miller of the death of her husband. I further certify that I have no interest in said claim and am not concerned in the prosecution.

Obituary of Catherine Luce:
Catherine Finley was born in New York City February 22, 1840. If she had lived until the 22nd of next February she would have been 83 years of age. In early life she was left an orphan. Her father died when she was 9 years of age and her mother when she was 12. In young womanhood she came to Illinois. She was there married and from this first marriage there survives a daughter, Harrietta Miller, Clarkson, Washington. December 22, 1864 she was married to Alonzo Luce, Toulon, Illinois. To this union were born eight children. One little girl died in infancy. Those living to survive the loss of mother are, Alfonzo Luce, Murray, Iowa; Mrs. Catherine Hammer, Rosalia, Kansas, Huldah Castor, La Porte City, Iowa, Eugene Luce, Arnold, Nebraska, George Luce, Merna, Nebraska, Arthur Luce, North Platte, Nebraska, Edwin Luce (who has long been an invalid), of Murray, Iowa. While living in Illinois the deceased confessed her faith in the Christ and was a member of the United Bretheren Church. When she came to this community she placed her membership with the Baptist Church. Thus passing from [a life?] that was long lived in this community as a friend and neighbor. Occupying a quiet position in life. She has been [known?] for her goodness and christian character. Duties tied her at home. She stood faithfully at the post of duty. We feel that as a soul true and loyal she has passed to her reward. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. E. W. Bowers, pastor of the Murray Christian Church in the late residence Friday afternoon, November 10th. Internment in the neighborhood cemetery. - The Osceola Sentinel, 16 NOV 1922, page 4
