"James Hosic Shields was born at Wheeling W. Va. on July 9th 1831 and died at the home of his son, L. C. Shields on March 12th 1906, being at time of his disease 74 years, 8 months and 3 days old. Having previously moved with his parents to Marion County, Ind. On November 14th, 1856, he was united in marriage with Melize Heston, whose death he survived but seven months, From this union were born two sons and two daughters, Mary E., Maggie B., Levi Calvin and Eli Alvin. All of whom but one, Maggie B, are still living and were with their father at the time of his death. On Sept. 1st, 1903, he united with the Church of God and lived the life of an exemplary follower of Christ until he fell asleep in the hope of a better resurrection.
Funeral services were conducted by Eld. Wm. Ellsworth of Fredonia, Iowa, in the Willow Center school house where sympathizing friends and neighbors gathered. Words of comfort were spoken from Ps. 4-8. After which the remains were laid to rest in the Willow cemetery..."
