Mary was born in Helmsley, England to parents Robert Parkinson Wilkinson and Elizabeth (Hancock). She moved to Canada in 1851 with her first husband William Close with whom she had a son Robert. She divorced William in 1854.
In 1854 she married Henry McHugh and had 5 children: Mary Ann, Eliza Jane, Elizabeth, Robert Henry, and Agnes.
Mary Ellen and Henry migrated from Canada to Matagorda Texas in 1870 with their children. In 1873 she filed for divorce from Henry and once again took the surname Close.
She bought property in Fulton TX in Nov of 1876 from Col. George Fulton where she ran an eating house for the workers
of the Marion meat packing plant 1 block from her home.
She lived in this small 1 bedroom house on Beach Road until she died in 1888.
Note: Her headstone shows her birthdate as 1832, however there is a England Census 1851 that shows her age as 25 and est. birth 1826 or 1827, and her christing as 01/02/1827. The headstone was probably erected in 1888 or so when she passed away. The family has no record of who might have inscribed the tombstone, obviously they got it wrong.
