Barbara Marie Whitcomb, 74, of Arnold, died Saturday, June 23, 2012, at Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte, Nebraska.
Barb was born at home on August 17, 1937, in Stapleton,Nebraska to Art and Estelle (Dillon) Flint.
She graduated from Stapleton High School in 1955. Barb worked in Ogallala for a year before marrying Edgar Deterding on May 13, 1957, in Stapleton.
To this union four children were born: Judy, Susan, Bruce and Earl. They farmed south of Arnold for a period of time. She married Harold Whitcomb on February 1, 1995, in Broken Bow. They continued to live in Arnold.
Barb was a member of the America Legion Auxiliary, the United Methodist Women and was a devoted wife and mother.
She was active in playing cards with her friends, as well as organizing the foot clinic, birthday party club and many other activities at the Riverview Apartments during her stay there.
She was preceded in death by her husband. Harold; her parents; a brother, Don Flint; and a niece, Rhonda Rose.
Survivors include her children: Susan (Jeff) Hunter of Kempner, Texas, Judy (Bruce) Allen of Cheyenne, Wyoming, Bruce (Mary) Deterding of Eustis, and Earl Deterding of Arnold; a sister Sarron (Terry) Conley of Arnold; brother, Robert (Jean) Flint of Arnold; seven grandchildren, Detrick and Michelle Thomas, James (Kathy) Deterding, Dustin (Lacey) Deterding, Jordan and Jessica Deterding and Katelyn Allen; six great-grandchildren, Domonic, Kristopher, Sophia, Erianna, Taylor and Brett; and many more nieces nephews, relatives and friends.
Memorial funeral services were held on Tuesday, June 26, at 2:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Arnold. Pastor Irving Jennings conducted the services.
Honoary pallbearers were all of the residents of Riverview Apartments.
Music was provided by Melody Jennings and Dorothy Larreau. Selections were "Amazing Grace" and "The Old Rugged Cross."
Cremation was chosen. Inurnment was in the Arnold Cemetery.
Memorials may be sent to the Barbara Whitcomb Memorial Fund, c/o 400 W. Hendrick, Eustis, Nebraska.
