Hannah J. Baldwin was born to David Baldwin and Julia E. Mathewson of McDonough, Chenango, New York. She married Henry Clay Pierce in 1870 in Sioux City, Woodbury, Iowa. (Hannah passed away within a year of her marriage) Henry was the son of Thomas W. Pierce and Louisa Chaplin. Many years after Hannah died, Henry married Angeline Pellet. Henry Clay Pierce died in 1929 in Colville, Washington.

Hannah J. Baldwin had siblings: Winsor Baldwin, Sarah Darling Baldwin, Mary M. Baldwin, Amanda Maria Baldwin, Daniel Richard Baldwin and Lucinda L. Baldwin.

Her family migrated from McDonough, Chenango, New York to Rhode Island, then Rockford, Winnebago, Illinois, then back to McDonough, Chenango, New York, then to Sherman, Mason, Michigan and the final move was to Sioux City, Woodbury, Iowa.
