James Armstrong was born in Salry, Co. Fermanagh, Northern Ireland and emigrated to Boston, Mass. between 1836 and 1839. His first wife Jane Watson Armstrong died in 1842, leaving him with 3 young children. The next year, he married his sister-in-law's sister, Mariah Caroline Kernachan on Nov. 2, 1843. While living in Boston, he worked as a currier at a tannery, a dangerous and nasty job for 50 cents a day, He was able to save enough money to purchase land in Henderson Co., Illinois in 1855. He was the father of approximately 15 children, a number of whom died young while living in Boston of Typhoid fever and Smallpox. He farmed in Illinois and then moved to Des Moines Twp., Van Buren Co., Ia. between 1870 and 1880. His family was of the Methodist faith.
