Obituary provided by contributor Downing.

Mrs. Samuel Willard died at her home, Coatsburg, Ill., in Houston township" Tuesday, January 23rd, very suddenly. She had been ailing and under the doctor's care, but her condition was not considered at all critical. She had risen that morning, dressed, and eaten her breakfast. Feeling tired, she was preparing to rest, and was sitting on the side of the bed, when she complained of an acute pain. Her grandson, B. M. Willard. hurried to her aid, and she fell into his arms, dying instantly. Eighty-Six Years Old. Cynthia Jane Stump was born Dec. 20, 1826, near Naples, Morgan county, Illinois. She was therefore 86 years of age at her death. When about fifteen years old, she came with her parents to Houston township living upon the farm which is now the home of Charles Stump. She attended the subscription school taught in the log schoolhouse situated upon the site of what is now Ebenezer cemetery, where her remains will be interred. February 23rd, 1851, she was married to Samuel Willard, who died June 17th, 1898. To this union were born four children: Mrs. Amanda Butler, of La Harpe; Mrs. Ida Strickler, of Meadville, Mo.; James H., of Winters, Calif,; and Samuel Willard Jr., of Mendon. All survive to mourn for the good mother who has been taken from them. Mrs. Wilard was also the affectionate step-mother of five children; Mrs. Martha Barger, of Kirksvllle, Mo.; Miss Elizabeth Willard of Golden; Alfred, of Laclede. Mo.; Mrs. Nancy Lowary of Carrington. N. D.; and Mrs. Mary Nelson, now deceased. One brother, F. M. Stump of Redlands, Calif., also survives, and two sisters, Mrs. Ellen Sprinkles of Meadville, Mo., and Mrs. Louisa Sprinkles of Mendon. There are twelve grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. About sixty years ago deceased united with the Ebenezer M. E. church, under the preaching of Bro. Fields, a United Brethren minister and has since been a devoted member, ever ready to do her duty. With the passing of Mrs. Willard the oldest-resident of Houston township dies. She had resided in this township seventy years, having lived for sixty-one years in the house where she died. Her family is a prominent one, always looked up to in the community. Of a kind, sunny disposition, ever ready with a word of cheer or a helpful act the deceased had, in the long years of her life, won for herself a host of friends, all of whom will mourn with a keen sense of personal loss the passing on of the kindly old lady.
