Kate married Anthony Johnson Kirkhuff on 31 December 1856 in Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey. They had one child, their daughter Sarah "Aravilla" Kirkhuff (born 1857) before Anthony died on 24 July 1862. Kate supported herself and Aravilla by working as a domestic. By 1880, mother and daughter were living in Newark with Kate's first cousin Jennie Thompson Durand and her family. When Aravilla married William Gardner in 1883, Kate moved in with her daughter's family. She continued to lived in Newark after her daughter's death in 1887, although she returned to Hope in about 1895 to care for her aged father. After his death in 1898, she moved back to Essex County, settling in East Orange with her cousin Jennie. She remained in East Orange until her death in December 1929, by that time she lived with her granddaughter Grace Gardner Walters. Kate is buried in the Walters plot in the cemetery.
