Liberty Man Dies in Wreck
A 33-year-old Kansas City man remained in critical condition Saturday. He was injured Friday in a head-on crash that killed a Liberty man, Roger Belcher, 37, of 207 Reese Road.
North Kansas City Memorial Hospital attendants said John Whitelock of 4904 E. 39th was in critical condition. He was treated for head and chest injuries, cuts and multiple fractures.
Police said the accident occurred at 12:30 p.m. Friday at Chouteau and Topping. Whitelock was driving south on Chouteau when his car crossed the center line into the path of Belcher's northbound car, a witness said. Belcher tried to swerve his car, but couldn't avoid the collision. The impact pushed the Belcher car 36 feet backward and threw the victim from his car. Whitelock was pinned in the wreckage of his car until he was freed by firefighters.
Doctors said Belcher suffered fatal head, chest and internal injuries.
Belcher's death was the 81st traffic fatality in Kansas City this year, compared to 98 at this time last year.
