Daughter of Thomas Janney (1772-1832) and Sarah Elizabeth Henkel (1775-1847). She sometimes is listed as born in the District of Columbia which had been a part of Fairfax County. Her parents were wealthy, slave-owning planters, and Adeline would tell her grandchildren of playing on the settee at home in Virginia with the "pickin-ninnies" (her words). Adeline married Dr. Richard H. Mauzy on 8 Mar 1830 in Culpeper County, Virginia. Shortly thereafter they moved from Richmond, VA to Palestine, IL, partly overland by wagon and then by boat on the Ohio and up the Wabash River. They brought with them starts of several shrubs and plants and among them were lilacs with delicate purple color which were kept for over 175 years by the family. Some still survive in Palestine at 109 N. Main Street. It has been told that as the boat neared Bristol Landing south of Palestine, Adeline and other women folk on the boat got all dressed up in their best for the landing and meeting the new people. It was quite a shock to them when they saw Bristol Landing, which consisted of a warehouse and a few houses near the wharf, and the people were not of a sophisticated nature of their native Richmond. Adeline had been accustomed to living well and being waited on by slaves. In her new home, it is said she was a fashion leader and was always a "lady".
Adeline's husband, Richard, died young in 1834 and she lived as a widow with her children, mostly in the home of daughter, Sarah Elizabeth, until both died 3 days apart in 1892.
The children of Richard Mauzy and Adeline Virginia Janney were: Richard T Mauzy (1831-1834), Sarah Elizabeth Mauzy Kitchell Haskett (1832-1892), and Mary Fishback Mauzy (1833-1855)

Gravesite Details

The cemetery record shows born 13 Nov 1806, but calculated b.date is 18 Nov 1806. I think it was mis-read when the survey was taken in 1975 because stone is so weathered.
