LITTLE RIVER | Charles F. Bellamy, 89, of Little River, passed away peacefully Monday, May 11, 2009 at Grand Strand Regional Hospital in Myrtle Beach.

Born September 3, 1919 in Brunswick County, North Carolina, Charles was the son of the Rev. Arthur Chapman Bellamy and Hortena Hughes Bellamy. He was predeceased by his parents; brothers, Owen, Clyde, Lucian, E. J., and Arthur; sister, Eula Gorden; and his only granddaughter, Dawn Tiffany Harrell.

Charles is survived by his loving wife, Leila Madge Vereen Bellamy. They were married on Christmas Eve 1943 and were completely devoted to each other and their family. They shared an endearing love and celebrated 65 wonderful years of marriage on December 24, 2008. Charles and Madge will always remain a stellar example of what relationships, parenting and family should be.

He was a loving and devoted father to his children and is survived by daughter, Sherrie Bellamy of North Myrtle Beach; son, Timothy Bellamy and daughter-in-law, Pauline, of Lincoln, R.I.; daughter, Pamela Bellamy Quinn and son-in-law, Stephen, of La Jolla, Calif.; and daughter, Portia Bellamy, of Charlotte, N.C.

Mr. Bellamy is survived by his grandson, Shawn Bellamy and granddaughter-in-law, Elizabeth, of Little River; grandsons, Christopher Bellamy of Lincoln, R.I., and Austin Quinn of La Jolla, Calif.; and great-grandsons, Cody Sayre of Oxnard, Calif., Morgan Schutte of Slidell, La., and Wyatt and Logan Bellamy of Little River. He felt fortunate to witness his grandchildren and great-grandchildren growing up in his visits to California and Rhode Island and their visits to Little River. He loved them just as he did his children, and they, in turn, deeply loved and admired ''Pappy and Grandpa''.

He is also survived by his brother, Edwin Bellamy and sister-in-law, Lois, of Little River; sisters, Mary Livingston of Longs, and Ina Loflin of High Point, N.C.; sisters-in-law, Juanita Bellamy, Shallotte, N.C., Mildred Bellamy, Greensboro, N.C., and Nova Bellamy, Piscataway, N.J.; and his many nieces and nephews in the local area, both Carolinas, New Jersey and New York.

Mr. Bellamy was educated in Greensboro and Brunswick County, N.C., graduating from Brunswick High School in 1936. He attended Business College in Greensboro, N.C.; and studied Naval drafting and engineering in Wilmington, N.C. He continued to pursue knowledge and education his entire life, taking courses in insurance, real estate and business law. He was an avid reader, having an interest in many topics and over the years, read a countless number of books and periodicals.

He began his career working in the textile plants of Guilford County, N.C. During World War II, was employed by the Navy to build ships and later to design repairs for damaged ships and submarines returning from battle. Mr. Bellamy spent the balance of his career working in construction and engineering to build textile, conventional and nuclear power plants for DuPont, C P & L and many others.

Mr. Bellamy was a charter member of Livingstones Baptist Church and served as a deacon for many years. He was a 33rd Degree Mason and a member of Grand Strand Lodge No. 392, serving as Worshipful Master in 1979. He was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Waccamaw Chapter No. 89.
