Johanna Williamson was born in Chicago Illinois to parents Tosten Williamson and Christina Svenson. She moved to Dakota Territory as a young girl with her parents. Johanna grew up in the Hurley community. Johanna was the only living daughter of Tosten and Christina. As a young woman she taught elementary education in one room rural schools. At the time the majority of teachers were men. Johanna was married December 27, 1897 to Adolph Peter Gunderson, an emigrant from Norway. Their married life was spent in the community of Hudson, South Dakota. They had a daughter Anna Christina Gunderson.
