Born in Lebanon NH, when 4 years old his parents moved to Brookfield Vermont. In 1810 he married Dorothy Reed. She died leaving 4 sons. In 1824 married Esther Bigelow, by whom he had 4 sons and 2 daughters.
When 21 years of age he was 6 feet 4 inches in height, and weighed 210 pounds, and not a man in Vermont could compete with him in athletic exercises.
He remained on the home farm with his parents. He was a member of the Congregational Church and was for a time a member of the state legislature.
His health failing he visited his brothers in Illinois hoping a change of climate might prove beneficial, but he continued to decline and died in Sangamon County.
