He was a businessman and consular official born in Minnesota. He graduated from Leipzig University (in Germany) and engaged in the banking business in Minneapolis and the real estate business in Chicago.

He appeared in the Hamline University 1895 Yearbook in Class of 1895 however he is listed as an alumni of 1893. It was there he met Vena Dunlap, a graduate in Philosophy, class of 1890 from Hamline University in Minnesota and they were married on Nov 28, 1894 by a Methodist minister.

He resided with Vena in Chicago in 1900 and 1910 at the Hayes Hotel. The 1913 Hamline Alumni Quarterly lists them living at 1911 Michigan Avenue in Chicago. It also mentions they recently were among American evacuees who arrived safely in New York from Wilbert’s consular post in San Luis Potosí, Mexico.

He was a clerk in the US Engineers Office in Washington DC and then entered the consular service.

He served as consul at San Luis Potosí, Mexico 1908 to 1916 during the political crisis associated with the Tampico Incident. At the height of the turmoil, he had to flee to Veracruz for safety. in addition he served as consul in Rosario, Argentina 1917 to 1924, Edinburgh, Scotland 1924 to 1927 and in Georgetown, British Guiana in 1927.
