Ms. Esther Marie Anderson, better known to friends and loved ones, as Mae, was the daughter of David D Anderson and Esther Hicks. At the time of her birth, her father David, was 47 years old, and her mother, was 37. Both of her parents originally came from Canada, and both immigrated to the United States.
Esther was born in Bear Lake, Michigan, and remained a residence there until just after her mid 20's.
Esther had lots of brothers and sisters. There was: Edgar Asa Anderson (1866-1948), Charles R Anderson (1868-1893), William Melbourne Ashley Anderson (1870-1953), Jesse Sylvester 'Vet' Anderson (1873-1966), Walter Herbert Anderson (1876-1954), Ida Jeanne Anderson (1878-1938), and lastly, but certainly not least, was Minerva Anderson (1884-1939). Esther also had a half-sister, of whom was born in 1860, with her Father's first wife, Submit Newcomb, who passed away only a year after the birth of Esther's half-sister, Elizabeth Submit Anderson.
Esther was a 4 year college graduate.
August 15th 1906, Esther, 26, married, Guy Bates, 32, originally from Ohio, in Bear Lake, Michigan. Guy's parents were also from Ohio.
On August 18th of 1909, the couple had a son, Guy Jackson Bates, also known as Guy Bates Jr.
By 1910, at the age of 30, the couple and their son were living in Detroit, Michigan. Guy had already begun, what would be an extensive and distinguished career as a teacher in the public school systems. Esther's (Mae's) mother Esther Hicks, lived with them in Detroit, as Esther's (Mae's) father, David Anderson, passed away the year Esther married.
On April 20th of that same year, the couple had a second child, a daughter, Audrey Marie Bates.
From the 1920's through the 1940's Esther and her family had lived in Detroit for over 30 years.
On the 15th of May, 1941, Esther became a widow at about 61 years old, as her husband, Guy, passed away. He had retired just 2 years prior.
By the 1960's Esther had returned to Bear Lake.
August 15th of 1966, the day of what would have been her 60th wedding anniversary, Esther, at age 86, passed away.
Both Esther & Guy are buried in the Bear Lake Township Cemetery.
