John Holland Reddell was the son of Thomas Richard Reddell and Member Johns. He was married to Martha Angeline Horne on September 17, 1844 in West Point, Lawrence, Tennessee. They had eight children.

According to the United Daughters of the Confederacy, John Holland Reddell enlisted in the Confederate Cavalry at Marion County, Arkansas on August 3, 1861. He served as a Private in Captain Scott's Company "B", Colonel Mitchell's First Batallion, Arkansas Cavalry. He was wounded in the Battle of Pea Ridge / Elkhorn Tavern on March 8, 1862. He was sent home, but never could recover and eventually died as a result of his wounds on March 18, 1863. His burial site is unknown, but is probably near his home in Cave Creek, Newton, Arkansas.
