MT. GILEAD: ROBERT L. LAWYER of Mount Gilead died Thursday evening June 14, 2012 at his home, he was 87 years old.

He was born in Mount Gilead on July 8, 1924 to the late Ira B. and Imo (Healea) Lawyer.

Bob was a lifelong Morrow County resident and a 1942 graduate of Mount Gilead High School. He met his future wife, Betty R. Boyd, at the Ohio State Fair where they were both exhibitors. After serving in the United States Army during World War II in both Korea and the Philippines, Bob and Betty got married. They were married on January 12, 1947 and spent 65 years together at Red Star Farm raising their family, Herefords, Boxers, and Farming.

In 2006 Bob and his wife were recognized by the Morrow County Cattleman's Association with a "Lifetime Achievement Award". It honored them for their lifetime dedication to raising beef cattle and assisting the youth of Morrow County. Bob was a member of the Harmony Chapel United Methodist Church, Seniors on Center, Morrow County Cattleman's Association, and the Buckeye Polled Hereford Association. He served on the "ASC" Morrow County Soil and Water Board, was a co-founder of the Mid-Ohio Herefords, and received an FFA American Star Farmer award. Bob was a yearly "Fixture" at the Morrow County Fair where he served as a 4-H Advisor and helped establish the Junior Fair Livestock Sale.

In addition to his wife Betty; Bob is survived by 3 children, Marie and Charles Bishop of Mt. Gilead, John and Marcia Lawyer of Marengo, and Mary Ann Lawyer of Mt. Gilead; 6 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Bayer;and a great-granddaughter Ashley Ostrom.

Friends may call on Sunday, June 17, 2012 from 2:00 PM to 5:00 p.m. at Gompf Funeral Home in Cardington, where the funeral service will be held on Monday, June 18, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. Pastor Jeanie Winters and his niece, Pastor Phyllis Fetzer will officiate. The burial will follow in Glendale-Union Cemetery where full military honors will be observed.

Those wishing to make a memorial contribution are asked to consider either the Harmony Chapel United Methodist Church or Hospice of Morrow County.
