Omega Lavada James, 101, of Kerrville, passed into rest on December 1, 2002, after a short illness. She was one and a half months short of her 102nd birthday.
A pioneer of McCullough, Kimble, and Kerr counties, Mrs. James had seen many changes in her lifetime. She carefully preserved her family's contribution to the rich cultural heritage of the area. Her father, William Marcus Allen, operated a store on Schreiner Street in which she worked as a young lady. She served the public as a seamstress for many years and could still be found at her sewing machine until several weeks ago.
Omega L Allen was born on January 21, 1901, near Voca in McCullough County to William Marcus and Penelope Abbi Childers Allen, the youngest of eight children. She spent her childhood in McCullough and Kimble counties, spending many carefree and happy days living the life of a country girl and learning her father's trade as a carpenter, which she used her entire life.
She married Charles Wagner about 1917. One child was born to the union, Naomi Christine, on September 21, 1921.
On December 18, 1926, she married Guy L James in Menard County, Texas. He preceded her in death on August 19, 1964.
Surviving her are two daughters, Naomi (Mrs. Hunter Ables) and Leona (Mrs. Spencer Ris), both of Kerrville; six grandchildren, James Robert Ables and wife, Linda, of Dixon, California, Douglas Edmond Ables and wife, Mary, of Copperas Cove, Texas, Dennis Alan Lawless and wife. Debbie, of Odem, Texas, Janice Elaine McGinnis and husband, Norman, of Austin, Larry Von Alexander, and wife, Jane, of Austin and Lester James Ris and wife, Melissa, of Kerrville. Also, she is survived by 14 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews; and because of her loving nature, a huge concourse of friends and extended family, many who considered her their mother and grandmother.
Omega James had resided in Center Point for 24 years, where she lived near and cared for her ailing parents. In 1966, the James returned to Kerrville where they lived the remainder of their lives. She was able to live at home under the loving daughter, Leona.
Omega James, along with her husband, Guy, and several other families, were charter members and responsible for the organization of the Church of Christ in Kerrville, from the time when they met in each other's homes and baptized in the Guadalupe River to the present plans for a new building overlooking the city.
Omega James faithfully and lovingly carried out the Lord's work, ministries to the sick and needy, comforting the bereaved, answering the call wherever she was needed. Her love of the Lord was the example that let many to seek His grace. At her passing, we grieve for our loss but also we celebrate a remarkable woman and her long and full life, well-lived in the Lord.
Services will be at 10 am, Thursday, December 5, at Kerrville Church of Christ with Mr Greg Cummings officiating. Interment will follow at Center Point cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Jim Ables, Doug Ables. Dennis Lawless, Larry Von Alexander, Lester Ris, Kenny Kensing, Larry Kensing, and Steve Kensing, all of whom were her beloved grandsons and adopted grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be James Duncan, Lyle McGuffin, Clyde Stout, C.E. Packer, Bob Saunders, who are very dear friends and brothers in Christ.
