A. C. "PETE" ADAMS

A. C. "Pete" Adams, son of Jeanette (Louden) and Albert Minor Adams, passed away in Crestview, Florida on August 11, 2010. His daughter, Debbie (Adams) Dailey, who has so devotedly attended to him in recent years, and her family, were at his side.

Pete was born in Cannonsville, NY, on April 22, 1918, was a graduate of Deposit Central High School, where he played football, basketball (co-captain of the 1937 championship team), baseball and was president of his senior class. He married his sweetheart, Pauline Hamblet, on October 15, 1939.

An insurance agent for most of his career, Pete had a hiatus as he followed his father and grandfather (William B. Adams) as owner and operator of the Adams General Store in Cannonsville, from 1951-1959. During that period, he also served for a time as Town of Tompkins Town Clerk (as had his mother) and, later, supervisor.

Due to the impoundment of the west branch of the Delaware River in the Cannonsville Valley, Pete and his family moved to Beebe Hill, just beyond the Deposit village limits, in 1959. He re-purchased the Sarah Kelsey Insurance Agency at that time, which he had formerly bought from (Uncle) Charlie Adams in 1939 and sold to Sarah Stiles, (later Kelsey), in 1942. Pete later incorporated the Vic Ruegger Insurance Agency and served the Deposit area through the A. C. "Pete" Adams Insurance Agency until his retirement in 1981.

Active in Rotary International, the Deposit Masonic Lodge and the First Baptist Church of Deposit, Pete sang in several Rotary musicals and also in church choirs. He and Pauline hosted Deposit's first American Field Service student, Birgitta Wiggstrom, from Sweden, during the 1960-1961 school year.

Pete took great pride in creating and maintaining the pristine look of his Adams Acres property. He was also an avid supporter of DCHS athletics. Throughout his life, Pete credited his DCHS coach, Fred Fox, as well as his father, for conveying to him what it is to be a hard-working, dependable, honest and generous-spirited member of one's community.

Pete was predeceased by the love of his life, Pauline, in 1992. Having lived in the vicinity of Ft. Walton Beach, FL since 1988, he is survived by two daughters, a son and their families: Richard and Paula Adams Jansen, Walden, NY, Daniel and Debra Adams Dailey, Crestview, FL and Albert (M. Adams, II)and Susan Coe Adams, San Francisco, CA, as well as nine grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

A memorial service for family and friends in the Crestview area, to celebrate the life of A.C. Pete Adams, will be held on Thursday, August 19, 4:00 p.m., at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Crestview Fl. A private graveside service at the Hambletville Cemetery in Deposit, NY will take place at a later time. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Pete and Pauline Adams Memorial Scholarship Fund through the Deposit Educational Endowment Program (DEEP).

Life is no brief candle to me. It is a sort of splendid torch which I have got hold of for the moment, and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations.
