Dr. Gerard Alexander was born in Prince William County, Virginia in 1826. He graduated from Louisville Medical College and again at Jefferson Medical College of Philadelphia. Gerard was appointed Assistant Surgeon, U.S. Navy, May 1, 1850, and served as assistant surgeon to the North Pacific exploring expedition, authorized by Congress August 3, 1852. He sailed via Cape Good Hope in June 1853, and sailed from Hong Kong to the Bonin and Ladrone Islands. Gerard returned to Hong Kong in February 1855, then sailed March 1855 to the Bering Sea, and arrived in San Francisco in October 1855. He resigned March 8, 1856. This information is from records at Washington. In the Bible of his brother, Andrew Jackson Alexander, there is a notation that Gerard was in Commodore Perry's second expedition to Japan. This was in the shape of a note after the record of Gerard's death. (Source: The William and Mary Quarterly, Volume 11).

He arrived in Texas in the late 1850s and joined his first cousin William F.S. Alexander, who had been living in Wharton County since before 1850. Gerard owned a plantation in Wharton County. He is mentioned frequently in his cousin's journal -- see http://freepages.history.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~barrettbranches/plantations/fleetwood/alexanderjournal.html.
