Robert L. "Bob" Wolfe age 87, longtime York businessman and County Commissioner, died Wednesday, June 13, 2012 at Lincoln. He was born May 29, 1925 at Columbus, NE to Carl and Emma (Herchenhan) Wolfe.
Bob graduated from Omaha Tech High School in 1943. He attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln where he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. He was also a drummer in the University Marching Band. For two years, Bob was a member of the U.S.O as a musician performing for the troupes.
In 1949, he graduated from the University of Nebraska in Omaha with a degree in Business Administration. Bob worked for ten years as a household buyer at Wright & Wilhelmy Wholesale Hardware in Omaha. He played in the Paul Moorhead Band, as well as, the Omaha Symphony. In the 1960's, Bob played in a band in the York area called Nosmo Kings. Bob and Verna Damkroger were united in marriage on April 12, 1953 at DeWitt, NE.
Bob purchased his first Ben Franklin Store in Abilene, KS in 1959. In 1962, he purchased the Ben Franklin Store in York. Later he purchased stores in Hebron and Fairbury. Following the closing of the Ben Franklin Stores, Bob opened Bits 'N' Pieces, which specialized in picture framing. That store closed in 2007 when he retired.
Bob was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in York and a charter member of Morning Star Lutheran Church in Omaha. He was also a member of the Rotary Club, York Chamber of Commerce, Nebraska Art Council, treasurer of the York County Republican Party, and a 4-H leader. He was a dedicated York County commissioner for 16 years. Bob was appointed by Governor Mike Johanns to two terms on the Nebraska Arts Council.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife Verna of York; children, Cheryl (Richard) Tonniges of Kearney, NE, Katie (Kevin) Sevcik of Cottage Grove, MN, and Bob Wolfe Jr. (Robin) of Wichita, KS. Grandchildren include: Drew (Krista) Tonniges and their son Ryun of Kearney, Kyle (Brenda) Tonniges of Salina, KS, Ashley Tonniges of Omaha, NE, Sarah Sevcik of Minneapolis, MN, Michael (Blair) Sevcik of St. Paul, MN, Lauren and Emily Sevcik of Cottage Grove, MN, Alex and MacKenzie Wolfe of Wichita, KS. Bob is also survived by one sister, Orthlethia Abbott of Aurora, CO; sister-in-law, LaVera Flebbe of Lees Summit, MO; and sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Hermine and Charles Leffler of Lincoln. Preceding him in death were his parents.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, June 18, 2012 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in York with the Reverend Mike Neidow officiating. Interment will follow at York's Greenwood Cemetery.
